Here’s my take on energy conferences that I believe offer value to those working in distributed energy resources. Let me know of others you’d suggest I add to this list.

1. Distributech International

Feb. 26-29, 2024, Orlando, Florida

You may love or hate this annual event because of the gargantuan crowds it attracts, but it has become such an industry stalwart that people feel compelled to explain if they do not attend. “I had Covid!” “My dog ate my registration!!” “Never heard of it.  I’ve lived in the furthest most Himalayan village for the last decade!”

2. Electrification 2024 International Conference & Exposition

March 12-14, 2024 | Savannah, GA

EPRI has put together an impressive educational agenda that covers all the bases on electrification, including buildings, communities, transportation, non-road equipment, schools, agriculture, industry and the military. One of my favorite session titles is: “Enough with the Pilots. Let’s Get Started.”

Energy Thought Summit 2024

April 15-18, 2024, Austin, Texas

I’ve yet to attend this conference but want to because I’ve heard it evokes great discussions. This year’s speaker roster is utility-centric, but there are sessions likely to interest distributed energy professionals on such topics as demand response, decentralizing resilience and empowering citizens beyond the lightbulb.

3. Microgrid Knowledge Conference 2024

April 22-24, 2024, Baltimore, Maryland
Full disclosure. I’m a co-founder and former host of this event, so it holds a special place in my heart. Endeavor Business Media now owns the conference with its acquisition of Microgrid Knowledge last year. The Endeavor team is dedicated to upholding and growing this as the premier conference about all things microgrid. Look at the conference advisory board, and you’ll get a sense of the caliber of people they are attracting to build the event. Also, I recently stayed in the Baltimore hotel where the event will occur. It’s nice! Right on the Baltimore Inner Harbor. The venue reminds me of the great on-the-water Microgrid Knowledge conference in San Diego in 2019.

The Electric Grid is No Longer a Natural Monopoly: California

The electric grid is no longer a natural monopoly and those who think so are “out of step with technical and commercial reality,” said a group of organizations who recently filed comments in the California Public Utilities Commission’s Future Grid Study.
